Copy files off an NTFS (Windows) drive on a Mac, even a damaged one
macOS can normally read NTFS drives, but only if the drive mounts cleanly. Pull a Windows drive out without ejecting, or let its file table get damaged, and the Mac shows nothing. Windows may even offer to format it.
Never accept “You need to format the disk before you can use it”. Retrova reads NTFS directly on both Mac and Windows, read-only, so you can copy everything off and check it before deciding what to do with the drive.
Why NTFS drives stop opening
- The drive was unplugged without ejecting, or the PC lost power, and the volume is marked as needing a check.
- Part of the Master File Table, NTFS’s index of every file, is damaged or unreadable.
- The partition table is damaged, so the system can’t even find where the NTFS volume starts.
Copy everything off with Retrova
Retrova finds NTFS volumes on GPT and MBR disks by itself, even when the partition table is confused, and reads the file system directly. You see the real folders and file names. The same goes for FAT32 and exFAT drives from cameras and older PCs.
- Plug the drive in and open Retrova. On the home screen choose A drive won’t open. Retrova lists every drive and partition it can see, with the file system it detected and a health check where the drive reports one.
- Pick the drive or partition. Reading a drive directly needs administrator rights, so Retrova asks for your password at this point and only uses it to read.
- Browse and choose what you want back. You see the original folders and file names. Select whole folders or single files, and preview photos, videos, PDFs and text before copying.
- Choose where the copies go. Always pick a different drive with enough free space. Retrova never saves onto the drive it’s rescuing, and it pauses by itself if the destination runs low on space.
- Copy, then verify. Files are written as temporary parts and renamed only when complete, so a half-copied file never looks finished. Anything unreadable is logged and the copy carries on. When it’s done, run Verify to compare every copied file with the original, byte for byte.
On Windows
The same steps work in Retrova for Windows 10 and 11. When Windows says a drive is RAW or needs formatting, click Cancel, open Retrova, and choose the drive under A drive won’t open.
Retrova copies files off drives; it doesn’t write to NTFS. Once your files are safe and verified, you can run chkdsk on Windows or reformat the drive.

Do I need an NTFS driver on my Mac?
No. Retrova reads NTFS itself, so you don’t need a paid NTFS driver just to get files off a drive.
Windows says the drive is RAW. Can I still recover it?
Usually. “RAW” means Windows couldn’t recognise the file system, often because of damage at the start of the volume. Retrova scans for the partitions and reads what’s still there. If nothing is recognised, Deep scan can still find many file types.
Will this fix the drive?
No, on purpose. Retrova never writes to the drive it’s rescuing. Fix or reformat it after your files are safe.
